Dressing Mummies-to-be in style - business spotlight

It’s time for another local business spotlight and I am so excited to be sharing the following amazing business with you.  I adore Beck and am constantly amazed at the unique, beautiful clothing she has in her store for mummies with growing bellies.  I don’t remember such gorgeous clothing being around when I was pregnant so I think all you expecting ladies are very lucky.  Go check her beautiful store out next time you are at Tuggeranong.  Let’s hear about the business from Beck herself (and a little personal stuff too LOL):-

So Beck, tell us a little bit about “Motherly Instincts” for those readers not familiar with it yet:-

Where do I start, we opened in 2005 with a 2 1/2 year old (James) and a preschooler (Bethany) and I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. I had a dream of owning my own business where it would be fun, exciting, challenging, and provide an income that would sustain our little family. My husband works full-time and loves his job. He is very busy and has been travelling alot. We have been trading for 3 years and I have become stronger, more experienced, met lots of amazing people, and built a small business that has lasted 3 years.

We have lots of wonderful maternity clothing and accessories for expecting mums. The store also has beautiful baby gifts, Breastfeeding tops and breastfeeding accessories. I source a lot of our products from Australia and new Zealand. We love to support local business.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

The people of course.  I have amazing people tell me their amazing stories about their life and sometimes the universe is hard and sometimes it’s amazing. (I tend to cry with some of them, it can be hard). I also LOVE when we find a beautiful outfit and the customer is so happy I get lots of joy from this. I do however have bad days and for some reason you tend to remember these days more than the great days. I love the hours so I can drop my children off to school and wave goodbye. I love travelling to see new products and choosing the clothing. You need to have an idea what people are after and choose the right product. This can be a challenge at times but lots of fun!!! Can I have lots of favourite things Lisa??? I love to be busy in the store!! We have busy days where I remember this is why we opened the store, to help all of these amazing women find a product that helps them to feel fantastic about their changing body. This can prove to be a big challenge for most women.

How did you get started?

Crazy I guess! I just started to make a few phone calls and went from there. We made a business plan and used this to go step by step to design and create the business we wanted to provide to the Canberra women. A plan is very important and very hard to write. You need to know exactly what you want to supply, what people need and how to get people to buy them. This changes every season and you need to stay tuned to what people are looking for! Lots of time and hard work also! There is lots of fun times but you need to be strong to pull you out of these hard times. Still trying to get this right. If anyone knows how to get the right work life balance please tell me!! Lisa!! Gosh, Beck don’t ask me, buggered if I know how to get the work/life balance right LOL

How big is your company in terms of employees?

We have had alot of employees and most of them with growing bellies. The sad thing is they move on with their new additions. We currently have the three of us working, we all have had children and remember what it is like to grow an amazing baby in your belly. Always looking for trendy mums to do a few hours so if you are having a baby and are looking for work, give me a call.

Where can we find you (website, blog, location)?

I am not as clever as Lisa with the blog, you will have to teach me one day. But we have a website at www.motherlyinstincts.com.au and I love any kind of feedback. If there is a product you would like to see in the store send us a message any way you can. The store is located in the lush valley of Tuggeranong. In the Homeworld centre right next to Aldi and shopfront.

What are your favourite products?

I love the Hot Milk bras, I wish there was sexy looking bras when I had Bethany 9 years ago. These bras a sooooo nice and their new season stock should be in by the end of August.

What is your favourite thing about Canberra?

We love the parks and the bike paths. As a family we all get on our bike and go for a ride. This is important time to spend with the kids so they will remember mum and dad going for a ride with them.

What’s your favourite ‘indulgence’ that is just for you?

You must be kidding !!!! I am really bad at this question as I go a hundred miles an hour, so to sit still is a little hard for me!! I really hate the hairdressers as they take soooo long ! However I do like a glass of wine, good company and a delicious meal.  Snap, me too Beck

I do like to sit and colour in with Bethany and read books with James. I am not bad at mixing up some play dough to make some animals!! I am a mum, we always come last. Sorry!

What advice do you give first time mums?

When looking for clothing make sure they are trendy and wear what you would normally wear. It’s important to look and feel good through your pregnancy. I find most women purchase jeans, cargos and a pair of black pants. These are your staples. Then you can add to these by looking through your wardrobe and putting all you clothing that fits to one side. You may need a few tops, a jumper and some breastfeeding singlets, cotton underwear and some comfortable bras. There are also products to help you through the in-between parts like a belly belt and a tummy band. These are good investments and help to get started. Don’t leave this to the last minute as maternity wear is designed to go from early pregnancy all the way through to post pregnancy. HAVE FUN! Some times this is hard but pick up a Bun in the Oven top $34.95. You only do this a few times ! Also take lots of photos, I know you don’t feel like having your photo taken but you WILL regret not having them to look back on. Believe me I would of loved to have dressed up and had some nice pictures taken so I can look back when my kids have children and remember!

Having their cake and eating it too

I adore this family.  They are so perfect together, so happy and grateful and full of love for each other and everyone else.  I truly see them as a family who are having their cake and eating it too.  I especially love Mummy A, she washes over you like someone you have known forever and instantly you feel like she’s a lifelong friend.  I love that about you A.  This was my second time hanging out with this beautiful family.  They were here last year when their very handsome Master E was born, now they are back only a short 15 months later (busy times ahead people) with beautiful Miss J.  The first time around Master E was about 4 weeks old and he just wouldn’t sleep no matter what we did.  Mummy A wasn’t leaving anything to chance this time, she booked in 6 months in advance LOL and so we were able to hold the session when Miss J was only 7 days old.  And it was such a massive effort, they had only come home from the hospital the day before and mum rocked up looking like a vision, hair curled and all.  I can’t get out of the house looking that good now, and well Fraser was born 6 1/2 years ago LOL.  I bow down to you Mummy A, very impressive.

I tell you, even though Miss J was so young, she put up a darn good fight not to sleep and I could see the disappointment in mum’s face.  So i just decided I wasn’t going to let this precious little girl beat me, she was going to sleep and that was all there was about it.  And voila, I think we all know who won, hehehehe………………

Okay so I hope enjoyed the sneak peek, I will have everything ready by Thursday, fingers crossed

The Tiny Russian Princess

This was a wonderful session.  The parents walked in saying their baby was quite an “angry and grumpy” little one, and that it could be from her Russian heritage LOL.  Her father is Russian and they actually live in Russia, just here in Australia to have the baby and then will be moving back in a few months.  They also brought along grandpa and auntie and niece.  I also had my photographer friend Jenny Ruddle at this session so the studio was full to bursting but there was so much love and laughter in the room it didn’t feel crowded at all.  And…………I don’t know what mum and dad were talking about.  After a few initial squawks from the princess, she drifted off into the soundest of sound sleeps and we didn’t hear another peep from her.  Mum kinda wanted me to come home with her, she thinks I have a magic touch or something.  Maybe I am magic……………..maybe I’m not, I’ll never tell though.  Anyway, I know mum is stalking the blog dying to see some images so I thought I better put her out of her misery.  Introducing Miss K………………

This was my favourite image from the session, I just adore it

And for something different, instead of a foot shot, I’m showing a hand shot.

huggett_17

I have a big canvas of a similar image in the studio and mum was keen to recreate it.  I think we did a fabulous job of it.

huggett_48

huggett_52

I love the little wrinkles in her forehead.  She was so tiny that alot of her skin was a little wrinkly, she just needs some time to fill those wrinkles out and I’m sure it won’t be too long.

huggett_21

There you go K, I hope you love them as much as I do.

The Cat and the Cupcake

Ahhhhh, you’ve got to love the teachers who come up with the ideas to have dress up days at school.  When making these decisions I’m sure they think it will be a fun and creative thing for parents and children to do together.  I’m sure they think it will help the children use their imaginations and to really stretch themselves creatively.  But I ask you, do they give even one moments thought to the poor parent (namely mummy) who has to somehow miraculously pull off some design extravaganza so that:-

a) her child isn’t ostracised (is that how you spell that word LOL?), and more importantly

b) so that you as the mother look like you give a damn about your kid, and let’s not forget

c) you come up with something so great that it makes the other mother’s puke with jealousy.

So the kids school was having a dress up day, which sounds simple enough but it had to be something starting with “C” which narrowed the playing field for sure.  Everything I suggested to the kids wasn’t right, it was daggy, too much work for me, someone did it last year, yadda yadda yadda.  I wanted Fraser to go as a chef which would have been a piece of cake and kinda cool, but no, he wanted to go as a “cat”.  A boring old cat.   So a cat mask and tail needed to be made, yup, I can do that and it shouldn’t be too hard.  But then Olivia settled on going as a “cupcake” which was a little more challenging.  Now the old me, the me who had more time to do crafty stuff, used to love doing this sort of thing.  The new me, the flat out running this amazing business me, well she’s a little less keen to spend hours and hours creating something that will quite honestly only be worn for a total of 10 minutes.  I no longer get the satisfaction from doing this stuff that I once did, maybe I feel like I’ve done it all before for years and years and now the karma god’s should give me a break.  Alas it’s not to be.  I was going to whip up something lame but then the competitive mother in me, the one who wants everyone to be green with envy about how amazing and creative I am, reared it’s head so I sort of settled for something in between.  Something that looked cute but didn’t take forever to make and would pass as something I put a little bit of time and thought into LOL.  And they were both happy with their costumes and hey, that is what it’s all about right?  Smiles on faces………….that’s my mummy motto in life.

So here they are, the Cat and the Cupcake…………..

And just so you know, Fraser wouldn’t even wear his mask in the costume parade so I’m not sure what people thought he was supposed to be, and Liv said her cupcake outfit was really cool and everyone loved it so I guess it was half worth it LOLOLOLOL.

Ahhhh motherhood, ya gotta luv it!

A baby boom

I swear there has been a baby boom lately.  I have met so many new little perfect people in the past month and each and every one of them steals my heart.  This sweet princess is no exception.  Mum and dad were pretty tired, I think Miss L has been prefering to party during the night instead of during the day.  Ahhhh the joys of newborns, and adjusting to your new life.  For those of us with older children, I know you can all completely relate to those first few weeks where your whole world gets completely turned upside down.  Adjusting to lack of sleep is the biggest killer of all for sure.  I first met Miss L when she was inside her mummy’s tummy………

Availability Update for the rest of the year

Well there are only 138 days until Christmas, wow!

Okay, have I freaked you out.  I know I feel a little freaked out that Christmas isn’t quite as far away as I thought.  This post is a general update of where my availability sits from now until the end of the year.  I’m a little amazed at how quickly I am booking up so I feel like I need to regularly update you all on where things stand.  I am so impressed with all of the wonderful organised people who have booked in so far in advance.  Seriously, some people booked 6 months ago for their sessions in October and November.  Now that is organised isn’t it……..but it’s the only way to make sure you get the date and time slot that you want.

At the moment this is what my schedule availability looks like:-

August - Fully Booked

September - only 1 weekday date left

October - 2 weekend dates and 4 weekday dates left

November - 3 weekend dates and 4 weekday dates left

My last session for the year is Sunday 16 November and then it is bye bye from me.  So if you want photos taken before Christmas, you absolutely must book in soon because once I’m booked, I’m booked.  No begging, pleading, bribery will help you.  It will be over LOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!  Have I scared you all suitably now.  This is very serious business you know.

So, any existing clients who know they have friends who have plans for photos before Christmas, do them a favour and let them know that the bookings genuinely are limited and will seriously be all taken shortly.  I’m giving everyone this information because I don’t want to feel guilty later.  These are the facts LOL.  Noone can say I didn’t give lots of notice.  I sound businesslike don’t I hahaha.

The only sessions available in December will be for newborns.  And speaking of newborns, if you are expecting this spring/summer and want newborn photos, please please please contact me asap with your due date so we can set a tentative time. During this time of year especially, I have zero wiggle room for fitting you in.

Enough boring serious stuff, update on my shoulder/arm drama, I’m making a slow recovery and am back shooting but it’s still painful and the end is not quite in sight.  It’s been quite a struggle juggling work/life/mummydom but there is a tiny spec of light at the end of the tunnel which is so exciting because about a week ago I thought this would be the way things would stay.  I’m such a drama queen, hehe.

I’m having a lovely weekend with a special visitor from Brisbane.  My extremely talented friend Jenny Ruddle from Jenny Ruddle Photography is here spending time with me.  We are boring my family to tears with all of our photography talk and of course the champagne is flowing.  Getting together with such a talented friend just fuels my creativity so I just can’t wait to tackle this weeks session.  She even helped me with a newborn shoot yesterday and it was so much fun having another creative mind nearby with ideas and an extra pair of hands.

That’s about everything for now.  Tons of sneak peeks to come, keep your eyes on the blog, especially for all of the newborns, I think there may have been a baby boom, I am surrounded by beautiful new perfect babies………….and loving it!

Mr Deal or No Deal and his new baby sister

I recently met the cutest little guy, and the best way to make him smile was to shout out “Wanna make a deal” or “Deal or No Deal”.  It absolutely cracked me up how happy he was when someone said this.  He would clap and laugh and so would everyone else.  And he was pretty excited to bring along his new baby sister for me to meet.  She was absolutely perfect, slept most of the time but woke up for some shots too.  Pop came along to help out and he did the most amazing job.  I found it sooooo hard to narrow down these photos, so I am showing a gazillion but the children are just so divine, I know you will see why it was so hard to choose…………I fear for the parents bank balance, hehehe.

I was mesmerised by his amazing eyes and those perfect bowed lipsrayner_52

Here he is showing me his sister, he was amazingly gentle with her for a lad who is only 16 months old himself

A true beauty

This little girl was just so beautiful, she was so good for me but sleep was definitely not on her agenda.  I am pretty good company, I can see why she didn’t want to sleep and miss anything, hehe.  I know I say this all the time, but I truly do get to photograph the most beautiful babies.  Mum and dad were so relaxed and comfortable with their new role as parents and love just oozed out of them.  This sneak peek is a bit overdue, this was the session I did the day that all of the drama with my neck and arm began so I do apologise guys.  Hope it was worth the wait…………

Fun Family

This family were so much fun.  Lots of funny banter between them and ‘S’ is just the apple of mum and dad’s eye.  He is clearly spoilt (in a good way) and loving it.  And he’s travelled the world, and all at the young age of 19.  He’s done more exciting things with his life than I could dream of, hehe.  And seriously mum and dad are bursting with pride.  And so they should be.  They have done an amazing job raising their boy, he is confident, funny, smart, friendly and clearly adores his parents too.  I had such a lovely time with you all, thanks so much.  I hope you enjoy this sneak peek………

And this photo has a funny story, apparently everywhere ‘S’ has travelled, he has taken a “double point” photo.  Kind of his little weird thing he does to tie all of the photos together so we thought it would be fun for him to include his parents in his “double point” craze.  Hang about, are they laughing at me??????????  What is so funny people………..is my fly undone, is there food around my mouth?  Hmmm, how rude LOL.

Blog neglect

Hi everyone, I’m sorry the blog has been so neglected.  See post below to understand why LOL.  To update you on where my shoulder/arm situation is at, things have not improved at this point, however my doctor now has me on a cocktail of drugs that would make Keith Richards smile, hehe.  I seriously am not a big fan of medications and to find myself so loaded up on drugs is a little alarming.  Apparently I am going to feel a little spaced out over the next few days while my body adjusts, which I guess isn’t necessarily such a bad thing because the pain has been driving me quite insane.

And I am so bored………………..I can’t type, can’t sit at the computer, can’t write, can’t clean (what a shame LOL), can’t cook (double shame), so my only options are laying on the couch watching DVD’s (which is fine for the first movie or two, after the first 100 it wears a little thin) and reading, one book down, lots to go I’m afraid.  Bored bored bored.

I have rescheduled every shoot that I can at this time and my clients have been so amazing, I can’t thank them enough.  Liv is still being the amazing helper and divine princess that she always is and The Singing Chef has finally realised how serious the situation is and was totally amazing over the weekend.  I’ve had lots of lovely emails and offers of help from friends which is lovely too.

I want to give a shout out to my beautiful friend Annie G, who has so gone above and beyond over the last week.  Not only has she taken my children to and from school each day, she has hijacked them most afternoons just so I don’t have to deal with them too much since it’s hard to even get them something to eat at this point.  She has bossed me around and made me rest and just so many other things that will hurt my arm too much to type and mention.  I just want to thank her publicly because I seriously would not be surviving without her.  Love you Annie G String.  Hope you’re not sick of me yet because I fear this week might just be more of the same…….
